  • Niten Ichi Ryu Shoto - White Oak

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)

Rounded Spine | Flat butt | Kendogata Kissaki

    White Oak available

This Niten Ichi Shoto is made from woods from the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan), available in white oak. This Shoto equips students of the Kenjutsu school "Niten Ichi Ryu", a school founded by Miyamoto Musashi. Intended for the practice with two swords, it is very thin, therefore light and elegant. It also suits practitioners of other styles seeking a Shoto to work on precision and speed.

Please note that the Niten Ichi Ryu Shoto is slightly longer than the classic Shoto.

This product is also available in the "Niten Ichi Ryu Daisho - Bokken & Shoto Set" with a 1000 YEN rebate in comparison to a separate purchase.
We also offer the Bokken (long) version as well as the legendary Bokken "Musashi" destined for suburi practice.

    • Choice of wood species: white oak
    • Available finishes: Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish
    • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki

    Finish options:

In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane-varnished weapons and replaced the finish with a "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.

Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal based oil.

Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sand paper), then we finish the weapon with high quality beeswax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantee an excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend at least to oil your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue).

    About Niten Ichi Ryu :

This Kenjutsu school, with a complete name called Hyoto Niten Ichi Ryu, derives its great reputation from its founder, the most popular samurai, Miyamoto Musashi. Loosely translated into "school of the strategy of heaven and earth" its specificity is a broad catalog of techniques with two swords, Bokken and Shoto (or Katana and Wakizashi). The two Bokken and Shoto of this school were created by Musashi himself and have therefore been used in this form for over 300 years. Also practiced in this school are techniques with a long stick called Bo. Moreover, there are several sub-groups existing, of which most are recognized as having a more or less direct filiation, as well as other Niten Ichi Ryu style inspired schools like Saotome Sensei's practice with two swords in Aikido.

Niten Ichi Ryu Shoto - Classic Wood - White Oak

This short sword just now received just now. Fast delivery.

And very nice, as i had expected.

This short sword was meant to accompany a full size bokken that I had earlier bought from Seido. Both are obviously crafted in a careful manner.

Reasonably priced. I'm very pleased. Thank you.

    OK I guess

Disappointing quality compared with other products purchased here. Small but noticeable irregularities in the edge and back edge, probably due to cross-grain.

    Elite Level Craftsmanship

I purchased the shirakashi oil polished version and was absolutely astounded at the truly elite level of craftsmanship! JUST WOW! You can just see and feel the superb attention to detail immediately upon taking it out of its packaging. The sleek smoothness reveals the skilled hand of the traditional craftsmen Seido employs. If given the chance I would personal shake their hands! This shoto, while lightweight, is in fact quite sturdy. This is my first purchase of a bokken/shoto and am completely overjoyed I purchased through Seido. Every facet of the experience, from the layout of website to the shipping and receiving of the actual shoto, has made it certain that I will be buying from Seido and their elite craftsmen in the future! Would absolutely recommend using Seido and their products to friends and family.

    Musashi's Life Lessons

A splendid shoto, yet something more than just a shoto. Excellent in practice, especially with precision and speed in mind. But for me, to wield-or just to hold and to contemplate-this shoto is to bring to mind and spirit the many life lessons of Musashi's art, contemplations and wisdom. Obviously a master of the sword and martial arts, but also a student of life who contemplated all things, we cannot then be surprised that he begins The Book of Five Rings with an analysis of woods and carpentry. For all who pursue excellence in the arts while forging spirit and mind in all things, consider beginning with the wood. The Niten Ichi Ryu shoto is a fine and unique piece of wood work with a value both practical and historical that invites the spiritual and philosophical. An superb offering from Seido, keeping the history and tradition before us.

    Absolutely Superb

I bought the shoto (in Red oak with Urethane Varnish), and had expected it to be quite light and prone to damage, to my surprise upon inspection, it was incredibly solid. The weight was perfect and the shape as well. The overall quality was wonderful (coupled with quick shipping! thanks Seido!)

    Emballage parfait
