Iaito & Shinken Kojiri
About our Iaito & Shinken Kojiri lineup
The Sayajiri (saya butt) is usually finished with buffalo horn (synthetic material in the case of Iaito), but it is possible to replace the buffalo horn by a piece of metal called a Kojiri, which significantly reinforces the Saya.
Kojiri can have different forms: Kuwagata (hoe shape), Nagakuwagata (long hoe shape) and Fukurogata (bag shape). It is embedded and covers the Sayajiri by a few centimeters. Nagakuwagata covers the Sayajiri by up to 10 cm. Fukurogata means "bag shape", it is embedded and covers about 2 cm of the tip and is the only type of Kojiri that can be put on an existing Saya (without having to redo the lacquer).
Note that some models are available in different finish, brass, brass with gold decoration, silver plated or solid silver.
The classic shape of traditional Shinken Saya is slightly narrower at the end than at the koiguchi. It is therefore recommend to select a Kojiri that is slightly smaller than the fuchi.
All models are, of course, entirely handmade in Japan.
