Camellia Oil - Tsubaki abura
Made in Japan (Isu Islands)
Ingredient: 100% Tsubaki Oil
Size: 70 mL (2,3 oz) / 118 mL (3.9 oz) / 1 L (33.8 oz) / 1.8 L (60.9 oz)
This oil has been produced on the island of Toshima (Isu Shoto), off Tokyo, for more than a century. It is used by many Japanese wood workers as well as specialists in ancient blade (shinken) who are looking for a more stable oil than the Choji oil.
The 70 and 118 mL are conditionned in glass bottles. 1 and 1.8 L are conditionned in metal cans. Cans are not available in stock and require about a week before shipping.
Treatment with Camellia oil is recommended by the craftsmen who make our wooden weapons. The regular oiling is necessary for unvarnished weapons. It is recommended also for the maintenance of Iaito and Shinken.
Utilization on wooden weapons:
Once every 2 months in the wet season, 2 times per month during dry season. For a better preservation of your weapons, it is advisable to carefully rub them with a dry cloth after each use. When you apply the oil, clean the wood surface by rubbing vigorously with a dry cloth, then apply the oil in a thin layer directly with the hand. Allow to dry.
If your weapons are not painted it will not be necessary to sand, but if they are, sanding will help the wood to absorb more oil.
Note that this Camelia oil is initialy intended for skin and hair care. We've selected this oil for it's unmatched quality: 100% pure camelia oil, no additive, cold pressed, cosmetic grade, almost odorless, and halal certified.

This classic Hanbo is available in Shirakashi (white oak). The standard length is 3 shaku (90.9 cm), with 2 different diameters to choose from.
Although it is not conventionally used in Aikido, the Hanbo is however an excellent tool for training on shomen or yokomen strikes from a mid-distance. It is therefore widely used in self-defense-oriented Aikido classes.
The standard thickness is 24 mm (8 bu), but the 27 and 30 mm models are designed to work on tanren (reinforcement). The 27 mm model is very strong, which also makes it a great Hanbo practice with very violent contacts.

Finish options:
In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane-varnished weapons and replaced the finish by a "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.
Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal-based oil.Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sandpaper), then we finish the weapon with high-quality bee wax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantee excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend at least oiling your weapons every month or so. Tanbo aka walking stick is a very practical weapon that deserves more study and respect, parallel with shoto, also sadly neglected. Size doesn't always matter.
AGreat HanboAs a beginner, I searched for a Hanbo (along with a Jo) that I could learn with and practice daily. After careful review, I got the ichiikashi (standard red oak). The quality of this Hanbo is amazing. It is balanced, smooth on the hands, with a perfect length and weight. It seems that it will be durable for me to practice with it for years. The wood finish is beautiful. It is evident that it was made by a highly skilled artisan.
