Product Information & Size Chart

  • Kakejiku - Bushido Calligraphy -「武士道」- Way of the Warrior

Material: Ink on High-quality Gasen-shi Japanese paper, High-quality Japanese Kifune Donsu.
Calligraphy size (total): 125 cm x 45 cm
Calligraphy size (paper): 65 cm x 33.5 cm

Bushido is commonly translated into English as "the way of the warrior," however it is more accurate in fact to refer to "Ways" as a plural term. Bushido is a complicated notion that has changed dramatically over time, and even within the same period, the understanding of bushido in one feudal domain may have been radically different from that of another.

Indeed, what was considered proper samurai demeanor in the Saga Domain could diverge from what was expected in Edo or taught in Aizu. Furthermore, because samurai society was founded on a rigid vertical hierarchy, the Bushido observed at the bottom of the ladder differed in many ways from that maintained by daimyos at the top.

When Nitobe Inazo wrote Bushido: the Soul of Japan in 1900, he somehow standardized the concept of bushido. The book that popularised "the way of the warrior" around the world harmonized all regional differences into a national ideal, and his vision is what most people recognize in bushido today, both abroad and in Japan.

This Kakejiku is a "Maruhyoso Kakejiku": It is made in Japan with high quality kifune donsu. The honshi is made of high-grade gasen-shi, a traditional paper made of natural fibers used primarily for Sumi-e (brush painting) and calligraphy.
