Hakama Alteration - Koshiita height adjustment

  • The Koshiita should sit on top of the belt. (Seido Hakama are fitted to be worn with a common Judo type belt.)
  • High Koshiita (Iaido style): The Koshiita is higher than the front strap, to be worn with a Kakuobi/large Iai type belt.
  • Low Koshiita: The base of the Koshiita is about 3 cm lower than the front strap (which is done by moving the front strap slightly up). This allows to fold the front belt into the "Judo type belt" without getting a crumpled Hakama when tied.
  • Adjusting the height of the Koshiita according to your belt/style of wearing, helps that the pleats fall nicely and flat.

Roughly translated as "where there is a will, there is a way", this well known proverb "Seishin Itto Nanigoto Ka Narazaran" means more precisely "when the mind is concentrated, nothing is impossible".

Made 100% from japanese made unbleached sashiko cotton, this product is eco friendly.

This product is a Seido original product designed by our team

Here are all the designs we offer and their meaning:

  • The Seido embroidery is based on the Seido label attached to all Seido equipments.
  • The Aikido embroidery is based on a calligraphy found in the main dojo of Aikikai Hombu Dojo. It was created by Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei when he was 80 years old, a period in his life when his calligraphy reached its peak. Note that the depth and extension of ideograms are a sign of an open mind.
  • The "Ki' embroidery is based on the same calligraphy as the "Aikido embroidery" but only contains the second kanji "Ki".
  • Judo - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Karatedo - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Kendo - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Iaido - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Jujutsu - Gyoshotai (cursive font)
  • Zanshin - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : Remaining mind, or lingering mind.
  • Mushin - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : No mind (mental state), or mind without mind.
  • Heijoshin - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : Calm, imperturbable, relaxed heart/mind
  • Shingitai - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : The unification of mind, skills and body.
  • Takemusu Aiki - Gyoshotai (cursive font) : Aikido concept, the unity of martial techniques through the concept of Aiki.

Option "Name Embroidery":

Optionally, you can add your name as embroidery. It will be embroidered on the left of the bottom part (same high as the Seido label), with a font size of 2 cm by 2 cm.
Please note that due to our technical settings and to improve the overall balance, it is only possible to embroider either a first name, a last name or a word (1 word).
For more information about Japanese embroidery, please consult the page "How to Choose your Japanese Embroidery".

Product Information & Size Chart

  • Deluxe Tetron Aikido Nobakama

Made in Japan | Black or Navy

    Material: Tetron (65% polyester / 35% rayon)

    Shrinkage: 0%  |  Weight (size 26): 0.92 kg

    Shape: Nobakama with Aikido finish.

Nobakama, literally "fields Hakama", was used by farmers. Its tighter cut allows better freedom of movement and prevents legs to get caught in the brambles. In the practice of martial arts, it prevents stepping on it. The Nobakama is in fact constituted of only 3 pleats on the front instead of 5 on the standard models. The Nobakama was used by Aikido's Saito Sensei (Iwama Aikido), but also by many Iaido, Kenjutsu and Koryu practitioners and teachers. For the practitioner, it improves the ease of movement, and for the teacher, it can emphasize leg movements when teaching technical movements (ashisabaki).

Please note that this type of Hakama is not suitable for practice of regular aikido and is reserved to a limited number of practitioners. In addition, the logo Aikikai is not available for this particular model.

This model is made of a composite fabric polyester/rayon, a combination that provides our hakama with durable quality. This synthetic model is solid and comfortable, and very easy to maintain thanks to a special iron treatment that keeps pleats perfect in any situation. Tetron is the fabric most commonly used in the manufacture of Japanese Hakama for Kendo, Iaido, and Aikido. The fabric that we use is slightly thicker and stronger than the fabrics used for the models below. The uncompromising quality of our fabric is illustrated by the 7 lines of stitching on the straps for enhanced robustness. The flexible Koshiita made of durable composite rubber is safe for any kind of ukemi.

Easy to fold and to maintain, this model may be hand washed and dried on a hanger (holding the folds using clothespins) without risk of losing its pleats or damaging the fabric. The color does not fade even though a slight color transfer may occur due to frictions.

Seido is the only Japanese company to manufacture Nobakama with an Aikido finish. This model has become a best-seller amongst the practitioners of Iwama-style Aikido, but also with koryu practitioners.

For maximum comfort, the strap length is adjusted according to the size of the Hakama.

As all our Hakama, this model is fully made in Japan (fabric, cut and stitching).

    Should have purchased it earlier

I have considered for quite a long time before making the purchase, with custom straps. The nobakama came a few days later than scheduled, but I was well informed by Jordy and his team, so no problem at all.

I am not a big fan of tetron/polyester stuff, to be honest. But for this kind of hakama and its use in mind, I do not think there is a better option. It was make to last, with sturdy fabric and strong reinforcements. It fits well and the color was nice - a real black color.

I have no doubt it will serve me well in training. Highly recommended!

    Smashing product.

Jordy was extremely helpful in placing this order and it arrived much faster than I was expecting.

I'm extremely pleased with these nobakama - they're really well made, are reinforced in all the stress points and sit tightly on the hips while being loose and comfortable on the legs. They feel absolutely spot on. I found the sizing a little difficult to understand but the pair of nobakama that arrived are just right.

I'll be recommending these to students at my dojo looking for something halfway between full hakama and normal keikogi. Thanks.

    Perfect items, again

My friends at the dojo liked my nobakama, and asked me to order three more items from Seidoshop. So I ordered it, and they were perfect, again. One of them had an embroidery, which is very nice. Thanks again!
