  • Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Daisho Set - Bokken & Shoto

    Made in Japan (Kyushu)
Flat Spine | Flat butt | Bevelled Kissaki
    White Oak

These Bokken & Shoto are either made from white oak, from the southern islands of Kyushu (Japan). Although this weapon set is intended for practitioners of the Edo (Tokyo) branch of the famous Kenjutsu school "Yagyu Shinkage Ryu", it is very pleasant to handle and is quite popular among aikidoka. It has a light curve, a long tsuka and a weight slightly inferior to the standard bokken. Its balance is shifted towards the kissaki.
A possible link claimed by certain historians between the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, and the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu, popularized this model, in a research context for the practice with weapons in Aikido.

The Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Bokken and the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Shoto are also sold separately.

    • Choice of wood species: white oak
    • Available finish: Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish
    • Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki

    Finish options:

In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane varnished weapons and replaced the finish by a "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons.

Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish.
We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface.
For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal based oil.

Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sand paper), then we finish the weapon with high quality beeswax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantee an excellent protection for several months.
For maintenance, we recommend at least to oil your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue).

    About Yagyu Shinkage Ryu :

The Kenjutsu school, named "Yagyu Shinkage" was founded by Yagyu Muneyoshi Sekihusaï and his son Yagyu Munenori at the end of the 16th century. It is the result of martial knowledge of the clan Yagyu and the techniques of the "Shinkage Ryu" school, which was founded by Kamiizumi, under which Muneyoshi studied after having lost a duel against him. Quickly adopted by the shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, the school "Yagyu Shinkage" became and still is nowadays one of the most famous school of Kenjutsu in Japan. The school is currently run by Yagyu Toshinobu, 22nd soke.
The term "Yagyu Ryu" rather refers to a group of schools having in common the same origin and which was founded by members of the Yagyu clan. Not to be mistaken with the "Yagyu Shingan Ryu", although having a link with the Yagyu clan, is very far from "Yagyu Shinkage" or "Yagyu Ryu". This latest is also quite different about some aspects and uses a much lighter Bokken.
Nowadays, "Yagyu Shinkage Ryu" usually refers to the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Edo Branch, and "Yagyu Ryu" refers to the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu Owari Branch.
Certain historians claim, (without going into further details) that the founder of Aikido Morihei Ueshiba had trained or at least carefully observed the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu.
